Wal-Mart's organization is the response to Sam Walton's visionary leadership, along with generations of associates dedicated to helping customers and communities save money and live better. In 1950, the Waltons left Newports cigarettes for Bentonville, where Mike opened Walton's 5& 12 on the down-town square. That they chose Bentonville because Sue wanted small-town living, and Sam could take advantage of the several hunting seasons that living at the part of four declares had to offer. Inspired by the early success of his penny store, and driven to create even greater opportunity and value to his customers, Sam opened the first Wal-Mart in 62 at the age of forty-four in Rogers, Arkansas. Sam's competitors believed his proven fact that a successful business could be built around providing lower prices and great service would never operate.
